Eisenhowers Policies Analysis
Eisenhowers Policies Analysis Jack Sha Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in Texas in 1890, raised in Abilene, Kansas; Eisenhower was the third oldest of the seven sons of David Jacob Eisenhower and Ida Elizabeth Stover. He was really good at sports in school and was greatly interested in military history. Eisenhower graduated from Abilene High School in 1909, and after two years of working at different kinds of jobs, he got accepted at the West point and graduated in 1915. Afterwards Eisenhower went into military, and when he was stationed in Fort Sam Houston as a second lieutenant, he met Mamie Geneva Doud, whom he married in 1916. Dwight D. Eisenhower, a World War 2 war hero, and a five star General of the Army, also the 34th President of the United States, was not only a remarkable soldier, but also a great president; as shown by his foreign policy, domestic policy and his efforts to achieve world peace during his term. Dwight D. Eisenhower introduced his national security policy ââ¬Å"New Lookâ⬠in 1953. ââ¬Å"The main elements of the New Look were: maintaining the vitality of the U.S. economy while still building sufficient strength to prosecute the Cold War; relying on nuclear weapons to deter Communist aggression or, if necessary, to fight a war; using the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to carry out secret or covert actions against governments or leaders directly or indirectly responsive to Soviet control; and strengthening allies and winning the friendship of nonaligned governments.â⬠Eisenhower cut the spending on the traditional forces like the land army and the navy, but increased the budget of nuclear projects and the Air Force. Spending on the national security was never below half of the total budgetââ¬âââ¬Å"Eisenhower did balance three of the eight federal budgets while he was in the White House.â⬠One successful example of Eisenhowerââ¬â¢s foreign policy was ââ¬Å"during his first year in office; Eisenhower told the CIA to solve a problem in Iran that started during President Trumanââ¬â¢s presidency. In 1951, the Iranian parliament nationalized the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, which is a British corporation that dominates the United Kingdomââ¬â¢s petroleum industry. The British in return put a lot of economic pressure on Iran, which destroyed their finances, but Iran refused to give in. Eisenhower is also worried about that Mossadeghs minded to cooperate with Iranian Communists; and he would eventually take away the power of a substantial anti-Communist, Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavialso. In August 1953, the CIA helped to make a revolution against Mossadeghââ¬â¢s government successful, and also restored the power of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavialso. ââ¬Å"In the aftermath of this covert action, new arrangements gave U.S. corporations an equal share with the British in t he Iranian oil industry.â⬠[3] Eisenhowerââ¬â¢s domestic policy was also a success, although there were perilous moments when the tension with the Soviet Union was really high, and they were at the brink of war during the 1950s. ââ¬Å"People often remember the Eisenhower years as happy days, a time when Americans did not have to worry about depression or war, as they had in the 1930s and 1940s, or difficult and divisive issues, as they did in the 1960s.â⬠Americans enjoyed the benefits that their soaring economy brought them, more than half of the Americans have a television, and many different kinds of enjoyment popped up. It was a time that Americans was free from the tension of war, people relax and have fun, the cinemas and bars are packed with people, and the latest fashion can be seen everywhere on the streets. In the eyes of the American people, Eisenhower was a great leader and they mostly approve his policies, because he often gets a majority in the votes, sometimes even over 70 percent. ââ¬Å"During the campaign of 1952, Eisenhower condemned the policies of President Trumanââ¬â¢s Fair Deal, but he was not like some of his fellow Republican conservatives that hold extreme views to the ââ¬Å"Fair Dealâ⬠. These Republicans not only wanted to get rid of the ââ¬Å"Fair Dealâ⬠, but also the ââ¬Å"New Dealâ⬠, so they can go back to government control of the economy. Eisenhower chose the middle path, which he called the ââ¬Å"Modern Republicanismâ⬠. The ââ¬Å"Modern Republicanism ââ¬Å"preserved individual freedom and the market economy insured that government would provide necessary assistance to workers who had lost their jobs of to the ill or aged, who through no fault of their own, could not provide for themselves. He intended to lead the country ââ¬Å"down the middle of the road between the unfettered power of concentrated wealthâ⬠¦ and the unbridled power of statistic or partisan interests.â⬠â⬠Eisenhower thought that the government should provide the American people with more benefits; he signed legislations that ââ¬Å"expanded Social Security, increased the minimum wage, and created the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. He also supported government construction of low-income housing but favored more limited spending than had Truman.â⬠Eisenhower made sure he had the approval and support of the congress for some of his most important projects that ameliorated Americaââ¬â¢s basis. The United States cooperated with Canada to build the St. Lawrence Seaway. Eisenhower established his biggest domestic program in 1956, the Interstate Highway, which is a 41,000-mile long road system. This highway program aroused the economy, and made traveling with a car safer and faster, and as Eisenhower said, this highway included so much concrete that it was enough to build ââ¬Å"six sidewalks to the moonâ⬠. Eisenhower made a lot of attempts towards achieving world peace, by using the great military strength of America; he tries to negotiate with other countries to decrease the stress of the Cold War. In 1953, America signed a truce that brought peace between North Korea and South Korea. When both the United States and Russia had successfully invented hydrogen bombs, tension rose again between the two countries. Eisenhower decided to have a meeting with the leaders of France, United Kingdom and Russia at Geneva in July 1955. Eisenhower came up with the suggestion that Russia and the United States trade blueprints of their military bases and allow each other to take photographs from the air of the other country. Even though Russians kept silence against this suggestion, but the Americans and the Russians were so friendly to each other during the meeting that tension relaxed. Eisenhower didnââ¬â¢t only focus on the Cold War threats he met with foreign countries, but also to the threats in America. ââ¬Å"He told his fellow citizens to be wary of the military-industrial complex, which he described as the powerful combination of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry. Defense was a means to an end, and the American people had to be careful that they did not allow special interests to absorb an ever-increasing share of national wealth or to endanger our liberties or democratic processes.â⬠Thus, Dwight D. Eisenhower is a great president; as shown above that his foreign policy, domestic policy and his effort to world peace during his term was very successful. Dwight D. Eisenhower achieved a lot of important successes, he left office as a very popular President, and his reputation continued to grow as time passes, until now he is considered as the 8th best president in Americaââ¬â¢s history. Air Resistance on a Fan Car :: science
Air Resistance on a Fan Car Problem: When a large fan is blowing air against the fan car at three different speeds (high, medium, and low), then will the overall speed be lowered? Materials: à · Fan car (Kââ¬â¢NEX pieces, small, battery-powered fan, wheels with tires) à · AA batteries à · Large 3-speed fan à · Timer à · Masking tape Process: 1. Load two AA batteries into the fan that is attached to the Kââ¬â¢NEX car. 2. Mark a starting line and a finish line two meters away from each other with small pieces of masking tape. 3. Plug in the large fan and place it approximately 5 centimeters away from the finish line. 4. Place the fan car on the starting line with the small fan facing opposite the large fan. 5. For the first test, test the amount of resistance when the large fan is off. 6. Turn the small fan on and time how long it takes for it to reach the finish line with the timer. 7. Repeat this test for three trails and record times and observations. 8. For the second test, put the large fan on a low setting and time the fan carââ¬â¢s progress. 9. Repeat this test for three trails and record observations and results. 10. On the third test, switch the large fan to the medium setting and time. 11. Repeat the test three more times and record observations and times. 12. For the last test, turn the fan on the highest setting and time the fan car. 13. Record observations and organize all trails and times into a table and find the average time of each trail. Observations: In this particular lab there werenââ¬â¢t many things that I observed, though I will state the small amount that I did. I saw that there was a slight incline on the surface that we were testing the car on. I also observed that the wheel alignment kept making the car veer off to the right. When the small and large fans were on I could hear their engines going. And when I turned the small fan off I found that it was very warm in my hands. Hypothesis: If the fan car goes up against the wind provided by the large fan, then the car will go slower with increasing resistance, because there is more opposition between the two with every increase of speed. Data/Results: I organized my times, trails, and averages into a table and a graph to present my information. Comparision Between Tabloid and Broadsheet Newspapers -- Media News Ne
A comparison between how broadsheet and tabloid newspapers convey the same story I have chosen to compare a story from The Times as my broadsheet paper and The Sun as the Tabloid. The story is primarily about a man who had raped his two daughters several times. In The Times, the headline said ââ¬ËHow two girls were trapped by shame, fear and the love of their own childrenââ¬â¢. The Broadsheet focuses on sympathizing for the girls, giving all information they have in a straightforward way and getting the story through rather than trying to get attention or exaggerating the story, as they did in the tabloid paper, The Sun. The headline was ââ¬â¢25 life terms for Brit Fritzl who raped his two daughters 1,000 timesââ¬â¢. The numbers stand out and make the story seem more shocking. 1,000 is a very big number and it makes any audience shocked to see such a big number in a headline. As this is a tabloid, you never know, the number might have been altered. But that is not the first thing that comes to mind when you see such a headline. You would want to read more about it. In the Broadsheet, the man who raped his two daughters is referred to as ââ¬ËMr Xââ¬â¢, as his family do not want to be recognized in public, and it is also ag ainst the law to identify names for a story about sexual abuse. But in the Tabloid they avoid needing to use a name as a reference. In the tabloid, the man is compared with a well-known Austrian person named Fritzl who just like ââ¬ËMr xââ¬â¢ had raped his daughter then imprisoned her. This is very typical of a tabloid paper to make comparisons and also use informal language such as ââ¬ËBritââ¬â¢. The language in the tabloid is much more easy to understand, and it is quite informal and simple. It is the sort of language you would use ever... ...ger audience, one who would rather know the general details rather than the whole story in detail. That is why I prefer to read a tabloid paper as it is easier to empathize with for you have a better understanding of what is going on. It keeps it short so that you can move on to the next story. But that is my opinion and I fall into the tabloidââ¬â¢s aiming category, and others may have different ideas. The Broadsheet is aimed at a smaller yet more complex audience, who would want to know all the details in the story. Stories in broadsheets are more about business, tax or politics, the sort of things that these sort of people are interested in, so it helps if they know all the smallest details. Broadsheet uses increasingly formal language, for more mature readers. That is why I find in hard to read a broadsheet newspaper, I would rather just know the general details.
Video Games Essay -- Technology Electronics Entertainment Essays
Video Games I. The Video or Computer Game Industry The now multi-billion dollar video game industry starting slowly. In 1972, Atari developed Pong, a simple tennis-like game played on the television screen. Pongwas followed by Space Invadersin 1978 (Griffiths 223). Since then, thousands of games are available over the Internet, on CDROM for personal computers, hand-held units, and television console units like Playstation, Nintento, and Sega. Further, the market has developed beyond just entertainment, now providing educational games that make learning fun. Commercially successful titles sell around 350,000 copies and a few go beyond sales of one million units (Sanchez-Crespo Dalmau 3). Top selling games like Myst (for PCs) and Final Fantasy (for consoles) have sold over six million units (Sanchez-Crespo Dalmau 3). II. Video Games and an Overview of How They Work Put simply, video games are interactive entertainment with sophisticated graphics and speed. They challenge the playerââ¬â¢s mental agility, as in games like Myst and itââ¬â¢s sequel Riven (where players solve puzzles and obtain fragments of a story to complete the game) and/or hand-eye agility, like All-Star Baseball, Combat Flight Simulator, and Mortal Combat, typically at increasing levels of difficulty, with some games taking over 100 hours to complete. Although not all games involve opponents and competition, games that are played off-line (not connected to the Internet) allow players to interact with the ââ¬Å"virtualâ⬠inhabitants of the game. Games that can be played on-line, facilitate multi-player interactivity and competition over the Internet. What promotional activities might Prince use to reach the following segments: (a) recreational players and (b) junior players? The first thing that Prince needs to do is find different ways to appeal to both generation gaps in the tennis industry. It is important to keep all the Baby Boomer customers and still grasp the attention of the younger generation. In efforts to get the attention of the junior players, Prince utilizes social media sites like face book and twitter as one way of promoting to junior players. The use of Prince teaching Pro Program is excellent for targeting recreational players! Princeââ¬â¢s website directly reaches tennis players of all ages giving them information on products, tennis tips, and the latest news from the industry. Prince teaching pro program can be used to target the junior players more because it gives demo rackets, equipment information, and the latest product information better assisting them with developing their skills and understanding whi ch equipment could better their skills and help them become more experienced tennis players. In efforts to attract the attention of both junior and recreational players, Prince holds local ââ¬Å"Prince Demo Eventsâ⬠. Compare and contrast Essay
Shakespeare uses many different types of love in Romeo and Juliet. The first aspect I will concentrate on is also the most obvious and is that of Romeo and Juliet themselves, who share a pure, romantic and passionate love. We are however told at the very beginning the fate of these two lovers. â⬠A pair of star crossed lovers take their lifeâ⬠, star crossed meaning that their love and lives were fated before they even met. ââ¬Å"The fearful passage of their death marked loveâ⬠. It is made very clear to the audience that the play has a tragic ending. Shakespeare does this so that because we know what is going to happen, we hope that it wonââ¬â¢t, which makes it even more tragic in the end. The whole play is based on the fact that timing was not on Romeo and Julietââ¬â¢s side. If Romeo had heard that Juliet was only sleeping then he would not have killed himself. But then in doing so caused Juliet to kill herself and so restored civil love between the two families. Shakespeare does this to show that their love was not in vain. Before they meet Juliet is much more reserved and obedient towards her parents. She is happy to marry Paris to please her parents. Her perception of love is very naive and believes it to be a very conventional love without passion, as she feels no passion for Paris. But when she meets Romeo she instantly changes and believes in true love as she is actually feeling a physical attraction. Their love scenes are always the most perfect of settings. For example, the balcony scene with Romeo in the orchard and Juliet on her balcony. Shakespeare creates very romantic moods to amplify the fact that they are in love. They speak to each other at this first meeting in sonnets, which are love poems containing 14 lines and would be very recognisable to an Elizabethan audience. Before meeting Juliet, Romeo was courting Rosaline, but because she was dismissed at the beginning before we actually meet her, Romeo obviously didnââ¬â¢t feel love for her. He tells Benvolio that he does, ââ¬Å"in sadness cousin I love a womanâ⬠, but on meeting Juliet his object of affections is soon forgotten. They now feel a mutual passionate love, and so the story unfolds as we see hope for them slowly disappearing. One reason is because of Julietââ¬â¢s father, Capulet, wanting to marry her off to Paris. He is not a bad father however and shows a strong parental love, he does not arrange the marriage to get rid of her, but to make her happy. When Romeo murders Tybalt, Capulet tries to speed up the marriage because he hates to see his daughter so sad; he thinks he is doing the best thing for her happiness. Julietââ¬â¢s mother however, Lady Capulet, is less caring. She was married when she was a younger age than Juliet, ââ¬Å"I was your mother much upon these yearsâ⬠. She feels that Juliet should have to go through the same as her as she did not marry for love. This is shown as Capulet does not show any affection or respect towards his wife, â⬠What noise is this? Give me my long sword, ho! â⬠This has a double meaning, calling her disrespectful names, which was one of the things Shakespeare used a lot in his plays. The opening with Sampson and Gregory shows a whole act of crude references to sex and women as objects, ââ¬Å"I will push Montagueââ¬â¢s men from the wall and thrust his maids to the wallâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Women being the weaker vesselsâ⬠. They show no love except a sexual one. Parisââ¬â¢ love for Juliet is a conventional one of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s time, where a man would be shown to chase a lady but there was no passion shown. This is unlike Romeoââ¬â¢s love of course. But it is not that simple because Paris is supposed to be the love rival and usually would be mean and selfish. This is not the case though and so Paris makes for a very worthy lover who could give Juliet everything she would ever need financially. This shows Julietââ¬â¢s views of love, because she turns Paris away as she only feels love for Romeo even though they could never publicly show their affections towards each other. The play is about families although little parental love is shown as I said before. The nurse and the friar act as substitutes almost to the childrenââ¬â¢s real parents. They try to keep them happy, which may be part of the reason why the story ends like it does. If they had left things and told them to listen to their parents they would have lived, although through their death, another love was created-civil. We do not see the Montagueââ¬â¢s parental love towards Romeo and although Lady Capulet can be viewed as a mean woman, both parents love their children very much. This however is only really shown at the end when the tragedy has already occurred and they are mourning. This also links in with a civil love; the two families coming together to not only love their own children, but to love each otherââ¬â¢s children as well. Montague announces to Capulet, ââ¬Å"I will raise her statue in pure goldâ⬠. This is of course a very generous and expensive gesture, to which Capulet replies, ââ¬Å"As rich shall Romeo by his lady lieâ⬠, returning the gesture. This is the turning point of the story; civil love has been restored in Verona as the two families agree to build a statue of each otherââ¬â¢s child in gold to remind them of how their love was so true and faithful. To conclude, I think that Romeo and Julietââ¬â¢s love overcame all obstacles even though it did not end as a perfect fairytale would. They have ended a war of hatred between the whole city. At the end where Paris visits the tomb of Juliet, this action in itself shows that he had an amount of affection for her, more so than we knew before, ââ¬Å"Nightly shall be to stew thy grave and weepâ⬠. He is showing a genuine mourning for his would be bride. This makes the story sadder because we know that Juliet could have been happy with Paris if she had not met Romeo, yet she died feeling real love, as supposed to what she thought love was before.
